At my daughter's eleven-year-old birthday party, I noticed some of her friends examining the tags of each clothing article she had received. What matters, evidently, is not so much how it looks, but its brand name. Adam and Eve used clothes to deal with their sense of shame, but ever since then it seems that clothes have been used not only to cover up but to give one a sense of belonging. Styles are like uniforms. They enable us to belong. Jordache, Esprit, Guess, Swatch -- they give one a stamp of approval. You are certified to be fit for human association.
