In a traditional retelling of the story Beauty and the Beast, the Beast asks Beauty the same question every night. "Will you marry me?" Every night, Beauty turns him down. "I cannot marry you, Beast." As first, she says it with revulsion. But as she gets to know the Beast more and more, each day there is a little more regret in her answer. We all know the end of the story -- Beauty agrees and saves the beast from death, and they live happily ever after. The Beast asked, and he received — but not immediately. It is the Beast's persistence of his goal that allows this fairy tale to have a happy ending. Likewise, when the Bible says "ask and you shall receive," it doesn't necessarily mean ask just once. Jesus wants us to be passionate about the things that we are asking for. If we are not intense and passionate, the question must be asked: Is this something that we truly want?
