One of Vincent van Gogh's most celebrated works is titled The Potato Eaters. Five hard-working people are sitting in the dim glow of a single candle, eating a supper of potatoes which they had planted, watered, dug up and cooked. Their work was hard, but honest. Van Gogh painted other laborers, like a reaper, a sheaf binder, a spinner, a shepherdess. He did more than imitate their form on canvas. He spent an important period of his life imitating their very lifestyles.
