Our late-2Oth century has been pictured as a time of great anxiety. Psychotherapy and tranquilizers find their way into the lives of many. But every century has had its anxieties. Every age has had its deeply troubled people. In the 16th century Martin Luther was obsessed with guilt and burdened with sin. His conscience tortured him until he felt he was near a nervous breakdown.
