To our modern sensibilities, it would not have been a pretty sight. Two grown men, apostles of the Lord, mind you, stood on a hillside ratcheting their sandals back and forth while little clouds of dust filtered a couple of feet from their faces, then disappeared. The crowd beneath them jeered. Some laughed, shaking their heads. Others muttered under their breath, gestured with their arms, and allowed that this was the silliest performance they had seen in a long time. Then, strangest of all, the two men put their sandals back on and, with an inexplicable joy, went off down the road.
