Out of my files comes this glimpse of an Irish shepherd reported to me by a former parishioner upon return from a trip to Ireland. "In Ireland there are still shepherds watching their flocks. Because most of the sheep graze on the open hills, they are marked by faint splashes of varying bright colors to identify ownership. One day last summer as we climbed toward the crest of a mountain road on the Dingle peninsula, we came upon a large flock. We stopped to watch the shepherd direct his dogs with signs and low whistles in cutting out a stray.
