The leper is an example of sinful man before Christ. He is 1) unclean a sinner not fit to live in society. 2) Religion cannot cure him. All the priest could do was examine the man and determine if he had leprosy or not. 3) The man had to go live alone or in a colony of lepers. He wore rags and the disease literally wasted him away!
A cure for leprosy was not known then. Lepers were at the mercy of God. Unless he performed a miracle, as in Naaman's case, or as when Christ healed ten lepers, the sick one was helpless.
