Paul reminds us that there is protection and safety in a clear conscience. "Do not be frightened," he says, "but set apart Christ as Lord." When my children were little, they were frightened by storms. Many a night as the lightning flashed and the thunder roared, a little voice would call out, "Mama, Dad -- I'm scared." I'd go down the hall to their room and sit with them, hold them, and sing to them until they dropped off to sleep.
