Paul Wellman in his novel, The Chain, tells of a young man who, in the midst of a bitter argument, killed his own brother. Later this same man became an Episcopalian priest. All through his adult life, however, he could never rid himself of the guilt of his terrible mistake. Some years later he was critically injured in an automobile accident. Attended to in the emergency room of a hospital, doctors were shocked to find a self-imposed chain welded about his body.
