The people of Babylon, from earliest times, were scientifically far advanced over their contemporaries. Their hanging gardens were one of the wonders of the ancient world; their libraries held a rich collection of information. They believed in progress, but they forgot God. They showed this in one of their early projects, in which they started out with lofty aims, but became blundering builders. They planned to erect a huge tower or ziggurat, which was to be greater than anything else in the world, but they did it in order to exalt themselves, and God was rightly displeased.
