Perhaps the blind man's friends couldn't accept his miraculous healing because they were convinced that God only helps those who help themselves. Maybe they would have felt comfortable in the company of a certain U.S. congressman. Horace Greeley encountered him one day at the capitol where both were serving in the House of Representatives. During the ensuing conversation the acquaintance of Greeley's boasted that he was a self-made man. "That, sir," replied Greeley, "relieves the Almighty of a great responsibility."
