Peter, Jesus said, had become a stumbling block to Jesus. We too can become a stumbling block when we separate ourselves from the church community, saying, "I can be just as good a Christian on my own." Actually we can't.
There is an old story about the Greek city of Sparta where its king boasted to a visiting monarch about the strength of the city walls. The visiting king could see no walls. "Where are they?" he asked. The Spartan king pointed to his armed bodyguards, who were magnificent troops. "These are the walls of Sparta -- every man a brick."
They formed a wall when they acted in unison. Singly, they were only blocks for others to stumble on.
