Pray for us. A minister...

"Pray for us." A minister was invited to become the pastor of a new church. The time came to negotiate terms. The church board came prepared to talk salary and benefits, vacation and study leave. What the minister came prepared to talk about was the prayer. "I know you will pay me fairly," he said, "You have a reputation for generosity. What I want to know is, will you pray for me?" He told them that just as he needed his salary to provide the basics of life for his family, he needed their prayer to strengthen him for a ministry which, were he to face it alone, terrified him.
The demands of ministry, faced alone, with our own strength alone, are impossible. One cannot possibly meet all the needs, carry all the burdens, comfort all the sorrows and uphold all the faithful when faith starts to flag and the night is long. Not alone. Not on your own. "So," he said, "if I am to become your pastor, I need to know that you are praying for me; holding me up in prayer every day. I need to know that this is a serious commitment on your part. For to be your pastor, I need your prayers."
