President Abraham Lincoln...

President Abraham Lincoln's secretary of war, Edward Stanton, had a hatred for one of his generals. Stanton came to Lincoln with his complaints about the general, expecting Lincoln to take disciplinary action. Instead, the thoughtful president instructed his cabinet member to write a scathing letter regarding the insubordinations of the general. Two days later Stanton returned to the Oval Office with his letter. Lincoln had the letter read aloud and applauded the powerful and descriptive language that his compatriot used.
