The understanding of Israel being a chosen nation and the Jews a chosen people is persistently clear throughout the Bible.
The Pilgrim and Puritan fathers thought very much the same way about America. It was a "new or second Israel." They were God's chosen people. They perceived their mission largely in the sense of a theocracy, the Cotton/Winthrop merger for example. Of course, there wasn't much room for a Roger Williams!
