Robert thought that his new beard gave him a distinguished look. It was close-cropped "professor-ish," and not at all straggly. He would prune himself in the mirror and see what he really wanted to see. He convinced himself that this little crop of growth down his face and onto his chin made him quite attractive. His friends, knowing his narcissistic weakness, and wanting to make him feel good, went along with it. They all complimented him on his new "regal" appearance, but neglected to tell him that, in fact, he looked much older. Robert, approaching 50, did not want to hear that.
