Rubber snakes are a favorite...
Illustration
Rubber snakes are a favorite way to scare mothers, sisters, and girlfriends. In fact, live snakes will do the job, too -- so long as they aren't poisonous. How many of you remember this snake rhyme in elementary school: "Red touches black, you're okay, Jack; but if red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow!"? One of the things that fascinates us about snakes is their venom. Rudyard Kipling's story of the mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi mesmerizes us with its portrait of dangerously beautiful cobras. No western is complete without the rattle of a rattlesnake.
