The Seventh-Day Adventist...
Illustration
Object:
The Seventh-Day Adventist denomination was founded upon the anticipation of the immediate return of Christ. Now, 150 years later they are still expecting Christ's return. When Lisa Beardsley-Hardy was a child, she thought every thunderstorm she heard meant the immediate return of Christ. Now, at the age of 54 with two children and two grandchildren, she said, "I'm getting back to waiting. But I'm kind of glad the Lord has tarried."
Application: Paul warns us not to be taken captive by a philosophy. Many people are like Lisa, they believe in the doctrine of the church, but they are pleased when they can circle the corners of that doctrine for their own personal preferences.
