Of shepherds and righteousness
Commentary
The metaphor of the shepherds has been a favorite among Christians, as hymns and windows in churches testify.
Jesus declared himself to be the good shepherd in John 10:11-16. In Mark 6:34 the figure is suggested but not clearly stated nor developed. Only the need of the sheep is emphasized. It is enough, however, to send our imagination spinning.
Isaiah 40:11 provided Handel the text for his soaring aria "He will feed his flock." Inspired by the same verse, many an artist has pictured the shepherd with a lamb in his arms.
