Six thousand feet above the wooded hillside beyond the Pittsburgh airport USAir flight 427 was being prepared for its landing early that autumn day in 1994. Suddenly the plane banked dramatically, then dropped like a great stone falling, falling. In 23 seconds it was over. The rush earthward marked by a consuming fire, and the earth and heavens were shaken as the great aircraft screamed to a halt at the end of the twisted gravepath it had cut through the trees. There were none among the 132 souls aboard to be rescued, none to save.
