"... But some doubted." Rev. Haven was the founding pastor of a New England congregation about 212 years ago. It was an ill-starred effort. If his "preaching had been very indefinite, not to say painfully lax in doctrine," that of his successor, Peter Sanborn, was afflicted by the sin of certainty. Absolute certainty is tremendously attractive to people who have dealt too long with doubt and ambiguity. Mr. Haven's legacy as founding pastor for 12 years was to stir up the soil which gladly welcomed the evangelical zeal of Mr. Sanborn.
