Some things are "written on the wind," which means they vanish as soon as they are created. Others are engraved on stone, to last forever, like the Ten Commandments. Still others are written in the sand, where they can be easily erased or where the next rainfall will obliterate them. The phrase "written on the ground" had a special significance for the Pharisees to whom Jesus spoke. It reflects a similar expression in the book of Jeremiah, where God says the names of those who "depart from me" shall be "written in the earth." It suggests such judgments have no enduring quality, perhaps because further thought and self-examination will reveal them to be self-incriminating -- which is exactly what happened, in this case, to the Pharisees!
