The Speaker's Lifetime Library describes two events occurring on September 6 which are appropriate for the passage "no longer a slave." Today marks the first full admission of women to an American college with men. It happened in 1837 at what was then Oberlin Collegiate Institute, now Oberlin College, in Oberlin, Ohio. Four women and 30 men began their studies together, but it would be a long time until other rights and privileges were extended to women, however, it was a notable beginning.
