In the student church I served many years ago there were two dominant families -- the Painters and the Bunners. Most of the congregation was born with one of those names or received one of those monikers at marriage. In fact, even those with different last namesusually reported being a cousin or in-law of one or both families. Their ancestors had obtained free or low-priced land grants in this part of the state during the Andrew Jackson administration and had stayed on the land ever since.
