The Sunday school class was discussing how to be good stewards in the community. They made a list on the blackboard of ways to serve:
* Recycle newspaper
* Go to nursing homes and sing during Christmas
* Bring food to the community food pantry
* Give to the United Way
* Always give money to panhandlers
Just about everyone in the class stopped and looked at the young man who made that last suggestion. Didn't he realize that beggars just take the money and buy drugs? How did he know how his money was going to be used? What if the panhandler asked everybody for money? Aren't you being taken advantage of?
Everybody in the class could see the stewardship in giving where they could get credit. But it seemed another story when they were not sure that they were meeting essential needs. It seemed okay to ask, seek and knock if we knew who was at the door. The Sunday school class was just not sure about being so open-handed to strangers.
What about Jesus' attitude? Christ did not limit the needs to just Christians or people without want. Jesus cared for the poor and downcast.
