This text is a favorite for those who are ministering to the sick and dying. What we say beyond the text needs to be thought through carefully, lest the patient suffer from our "comforting words." Consider the case of Marie Maurice MacMahon, the one-time president of France. Visiting a field hospital, he addressed a few words to a soldier who lay ill with a tropical fever. "Yes, that's a nasty disease you've got there," he said, trying to sound empathetic. But then he added, "You either die of it or go crazy. I've been through it myself."
