There are varieties of gifts but one Spirit. Harold Macmillan, onetime leader of the British government, had the gift of leadership. His son, Maurice, had the gift of principled dissent. Maurice turned out to be one of his father's key critics. He once wrote a letter to the times of London attacking the government in general and his father in particular. By way of reply, Macmillan announced in the House of Commons, "The member for Halifax [Maurice Macmillan] has intelligence and independence. How he got them is not for me to say."
