There is a longing in the United States for a return to values. Evidence of this may be found in examining the best-
seller list at the book stores. In 1994 the Roman Catholic Church published the English translation of its new catechism, a large book that tells about what the church believes about God, Jesus, prayer and just about every aspect of the Christian faith. When the book first went to the printer, they did not make that many copies, believing that only priests and nuns and teachers would want a copy. But to the surprise of the church, they could not print the catechism books fast enough. They were being bought from the shelves almost as quickly as they were being put out. Or there is the book that was written in 1993 by William Bennett, who was the Secretary of Education under President Reagan and the drug czar under President Bush. Bennett's book is called The Book of Virtues. And for 831 pages, he includes hundreds of stories, fables and poems that give examples of virtues like honesty, loyalty and bravery. The book is not full of laughs, and it costs about $30, but still it was among the best-selling books for the year. We are too well aware of the evil that is around us in our society. But God has promised not to sweep away the righteous with the unrighteous. -- Bowen
