There was a wonderful church...

There was a wonderful church, on fire for the Lord, spiritually strengthened by revival services and altar calls. Despite its remote, rural setting, it had impressive accomplishments. With a few years, the church built a major Sunday school annex, rebuilt its campground tabernacle into a modern fellowship hall, moved the pastor from part-time to full-time, built a new parsonage and remained debt-free through it all.
This 200-member congregation regularly had about 50 people under the age of 25 in worship. It was a shining example of what could be accomplished with even a modest-sized congregation.
Then dissension hit. Changes brought about by the church's growth unsettled those who were comfortable with the status quo. Immorality was uncovered in the life of a prominent lay leader. Despite prosperity within the congregation, a small contingent was harshly critical of the popular pastor. Therefore, when another pastoral opportunity was available to the preacher, he moved elsewhere. The church began a self-inflicted downward spiral. Once a model of how God could endow a church with resources from above, it became a mere shell of its former self. Most sadly, the young people drifted away, disillusioned by it all.
