Through twenty Christian centuries there has never prevailed one "official" version of the meaning of Jesus' atoning death. Each age of the church has seemed to lift up its favorite. One of the most appealing for some of us was offered by Abelard, a French theologian, who argued that Jesus' death was such a powerful act of eternal love that it literally shamed a disobedient human race into response: it functioned as a sort of "magnet." Once you realize what God has done for you, and let it touch your heart, the draw of that magnet becomes magnetic.
