True to its intent the NRSV renders verse six as "brothers and sisters." The sisters were not even mentioned in the former wording. Please note, this is an all male list. The gospel for Easter Sunday is John 20:1-18. The listener in the pew, if thoughtfully listening, is going to catch a contradiction here. John says Mary was the first to see the risen Lord. And what about the women mentioned as first at the scene in the other gospels? What's going on here? Is Paul quoting a later bit of tradition edited in the interest of male dominance in the leadership of the church? Why not base the sermon on the gospel lesson and give Mary Magdalene her due. In preparing, check out chapter 3 in The Women Around Jesus, by Elisabeth Moltmann-
