Victory celebrations are a common sight in modern American culture, but certain ones stand out above the rest. The 1980 victory of the United States Hockey team over the team from the Soviet Union at Lake Placid is called the "miracle on ice." Only 13 days prior to the Olympics, the team lost to the Soviets 10-3 in Madison Square Garden. Among the 12 teams qualifying for spots in the Olympic Games, the U.S. team was seeded seventh, so hopes for a medal were not high. Surprisingly, the team reached the gold medal game with a 4-0-1 record.
