The wages of sin is death. Among the sins that plague the ambitious are arrogance, cruelty, and the will to power.
Frederick II, King of Prussia, gained a reputation of treating others ruthlessly, ruling with an iron fist. As he lay dying, he summoned the great German physician, Georg von Zimmermann. Realizing he was about to die, Frederick remarked to the doctor, "You have, I presume, sir, helped many a man into the next world."
Said the doctor transparently, "Not as many as Your Majesty."
