Illustration
Walt Whitman's poem "Reconciliation" was penned soon after the Civil War. Whitman was a man of peace and this poetic verse reveals how much violence and carnage were an anathema to his nature. Whitman sought to "bind up the nation's wounds" and to restore a respect and brotherhood between North and South. This particular poem makes mention of white men agonizing over fractured relationships but can be extended to all peoples, genders, and situations.
Word over all, beautiful as the sky,
Beautiful that war and all its
deeds of carnage
Word over all, beautiful as the sky,
Beautiful that war and all its
deeds of carnage
