We are told that after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant in Appomattox, Virginia, ending the Civil War, the Union soldiers raised a great cheer as the weeping Confederate soldiers processed out of the city to return to their homes. When Grant heard his soldiers cheering, he immediately ordered them to be silent. "The war is over," he said. "The rebels are our countrymen again."
