We live in the midst...
Illustration
We live in the midst of a very mechanically-minded world. We can easily think of people as machines and society as cold and heartless. Even our vocabulary betrays mechanical jargon when we speak of kidneys "shutting down," the lungs "running out of gas," and the mind as "snapping." Allowing for poetic expressions, these terms would more correctly fit a car or even a household, but hardly a human being.
