The western church has often talked about discipleship as doing God's will: God saves us in Jesus, and we respond by doing God's will. It is a way of understanding how God uses us.
In the Eastern Church there is a doctrine called theosis. It sees the Christian life in a different way. As the baptized live out their lives they do so as vessels for God. The Christian life is growing in fulfilling our roles to bear God in our lives. Perhaps we in the West would do better as Christ's ambassadors if we recognized that God has chosen to live in us. As such, we not only represent Christ; we RE-present Christ, everywhere we go.
