When Caroline's baby was born...
Illustration
When Caroline's baby was born in 1939, delivered by a midwife in a small Louisiana town, the proud mother exclaimed to relatives and friends, "I have just given birth to a future president!" When gentile derision followed that statement, the mother held her baby close and said, "Well, maybe he won't be president, but my Patrick will be somebody, you just wait and see!"
In February 1994, Patrick died in his own AIDS hospice, eight years after establishing the place of refuge, and 11 years after contracting the disease through a blood transfusion following an automobile accident.
