When Cathy, from the comic strip by Cathy Guieswite, went to "The Last Resort," a fitness and health resort, she was offered her choice between the "torture system," where every moment was supervised, and the "honor system," where persons used their own self-discipline. She quickly and loudly proclaimed her preference for the torture system, by saying, "I want the most grueling fitness program you can drag one body through in seven days." But her first meal, a small cup of health food, convinced her she wasn't up to it. She had made the wrong choice because the demands were too great.
When Joshua offered the children of Israel a choice as to which god they would serve, he told them that he had already made his choice. He would serve Yahweh. Remembering that Yahweh had freed them from Egypt, the people declared that he was more worthy of their allegiance than the local gods of any other country they might be in. But Joshua, in turn, warned them that serving Yahweh meant serving the God who tolerated no other gods in his presence.
It was a choice that would require the best of their self-discipline; and it would have eternal consequences.
