When I was a youngster I remember cutting myself on purpose, and then intermingling my blood with a friend who had cut himself, too. We were led to believe it made us "blood brothers."
Blood has always been the seat of the mystery of life, and considered to be sacred to God. It has a way of binding up relationships. We speak of "blood kin."
Moses took half the blood and threw it against the altar. (Exodus 24:6) He then took the rest and threw it upon the people. (Exodus 24:8) This dramatized, in a powerful way, the uniting of the Lord and the people.
