When the Japanese raped Nanking, China, beginning December 12, 1937, an unlikely savior emerged in the person of John Rabe, a member of the Nazi party, a loyal follower of Adolf Hitler, and a representative of one of Germany's industrial complexes operating in China. Together with a coalition of Americans, British, and other foreigners, he was able to establish a safe haven for the Chinese who were being hounded to death.
