When John Kennedy was in...

When John Kennedy was in the White House, underlings would complain to him about something or other being "unfair." Kennedy is reported to have snapped back, "Life is unfair!" And so it is. One time I visited the hospital and witnessed a young child being wheeled down the hall. This child's head was shaved and, I assume, he was being treated for cancer. That doesn't seem fair. I buried a fifty-year-old man who left a family. That's too young to die. Life is unfair. An oilrig capsized in Louisiana. Ten men died. That doesn't seem right.
Our faith affirms that life indeed does appear to be unfair and capricious, but God has the ultimate word. Meanwhile, we are to do everything we can to see that all human beings are treated with love and respect. We are to do everything possible to see justice done. We are to do all within our power to see that the hungry are fed and the homeless sheltered. There is much we can do to see that human affairs are just and that the powerful do not take advantage of the powerless.
