When John trudged through the snow to the barn last night, it was only for a routine check of the cows which were calving. He noticed a young heifer in the midst of delivering her first calf. There was a problem, the calf had presented its feet first -- breech. John called the on-call veterinarian, and rolled up his sleeves to help this first-time mother. His first objective was to save the heifer's life, then if possible that of the newborn calf.
