When the Magi came from the East to find the Christ Child, they were following a quest toward something that they wanted to find and cherish more than anything else. Neither deserts, distance, danger, nor a dastardly local monarch could turn them aside.
The same spirit was in evidence in the life of Alfred, who was destined to become one of the great kings in England. As a youth, he demonstrated a remarkable memory, which served him well since his meager education left him functionally illiterate.
