When President Dwight D. Eisenhower was in office, he had an unusual item that he kept on his desk -- a string. The reason for the string lay in his use of it as an object lesson. He would say, "There are two types of leadership. There is the type that is always pushing," and he would push the string from behind and it would end up in a wad. "Or there is the type that leads by pulling," and with his finger he would pull the string along the desk and it would lengthen out and move forward.
