While Richard Lamm served as the Democratic governor of Colorado he wrote a book titled Megatraumas. In his book Lamm painted a rather bleak picture of America's future. When he was questioned about his projections, Lamm commented that he believed that Americans commonly have a fatalistic belief that God is an American and that every generation should be guaranteed the right to be richer than the previous generation. He indicated that history teaches the bitter lesson that most civilizations commit suicide when they entertain such romantic notions.
