Why is it so rare...

Why is it so rare to see a man who can stand on his own feet? Even the great Carlyle, who frightened many people, proclaimed that he stood on his father as on a stone pillar buried in the ground under him. The unspoken implication is that if he stood on his own feet alone, the ground would cave in under him.
To know people is to know that under each person is a pillar on which they stand. The weaker the pillar, the less likely they can stand through storm and stress. The stronger the pillar, the more likely it will under gird them in the most difficult of times.
