William Warburton, bishop of Gloucester...
Illustration
William Warburton, bishop of Gloucester, was praising the idea of the divine right of kings. One of his guests, the actor, James Quin, asked him to drop the subject, since he himself was a Republican (one whose party had favored the overthrow of royalty in England). Quin suggested, "Perhaps I even think that the execution of Charles I might have been justified." That irritated the bishop, who demanded, "By what law?" Replied Quin, "By all the laws that he had left to the country." The bishop was not finished.
