The Wisdom literature in the Bible shows deep concern for a topic equally timely today; how can parents rear their children to be disciplined yet devoted? Sirach 3 lays strict duties on children: respect for parents, even the aged and infirm. A parallel passage in Sirach 30 enjoins strict, even brutal, punishment as the test of parental success.
Shakespeare illustrated many of the same concerns in King Lear. Especially moving is the opening scene, where the aging and sentimental king offers to divide up his lands and authority among his daughters.
