The woman was haggard and dirty. All of her possessions were in the bags she wheeled around in the shopping cart. If one looked carefully it was easy to see that she was not very old. She carried herself with dignity, a dignity that belied her appearance. Her favorite place was the church in the center of the city. She could be found there, in the back, every day early in the morning after the doors were opened and then again in the evening before the doors were locked for the night.
